WINNING SPELL CAST OVER HALLOWEEN WEEKEND

Lady Luck was very busy as Opera House Casino celebrated it’s fourth anniversary in style last weekend. On Friday the venue welcomed a record number of customers – all hoping to be the lucky winner of a brand new MINI One that was given away that night!

Since the beginning of July nearly one hundred thousand tickets have been given to members as they visited the casino. As over a thousand people looked on in anticipation, Mr Hussain Salari was the man of the moment and was handed the keys to his brand new car.

Opera House Casino’s Assistant General Manager, Craig Bateman, said “It was great to see the casino so busy and the atmosphere was electric as we approached the time to draw the winning ticket. Mr Hussain is well known to us and we’re thrilled that one of our regular customers won the MINI.”

On Saturday the celebrations continued as local electrician, Nicholas Keogh, grabbed a grand in Opera House Casino’s second customer prize draw of the weekend.

When asked why they decided to give away two major prizes over one weekend, Mr Bateman replied, “The last eighteen months or so have been difficult times for everyone and we wanted to show our appreciation to our customers for their continued support. When it comes down to it, this is a local business, owned by a local family, and it relies on local people. Even during the recession the locals have shown their support for this venue and we felt that our fourth anniversary would be the perfect time to say ‘thank you’”.

But Lady Luck didn’t stop with two winners in the casino. One lucky customer of Opera House Bet, the casino’s on-site betting shop won an amazing £11,000 from an accumulator bet, consisting of six horse races!

Opera House Casino has just taken delivery of a brand new MINI One which will be given away to one of it’s members in a free prize draw, to be held on Friday 30 October.

Opera House Bet, enjoyed its official launch on Saturday, with internationally renowned poker star, Dave “Devil Fish” Ulliott making a guest appearance to cut the ribbon.

Dozens of betting and poker enthusiasts turned out at midday to welcome “Devil Fish” and have the opportunity to get an autograph and some helpful tips & hints for their own game.

Immediately after the launch Opera House Casino, who’s dynamic management team are behind this latest venture, hosted a celebratory Texas Hold’em tournament, with 100 poker enthusiasts taking part.

Commenting on the opening of Opera House Bet, operations director, Rob Coldham said: “This new venture is particularly exciting as we are the first UK based casino that can boast an adjoining betting shop, which is operated by the same company. We view Opera House Bet very much as an extension of the casino’s facilities which will give our customers new betting opportunities to enjoy in contemporary, yet familiar surroundings.

NORTH STREET DEVELOPMENT UPDATE - Friday, October 10, 2008

OUTLINE PLANNING PERMISSION HAS BEEN GRANTED TO THE OWNERS OF OPERA HOUSE CASINO AND THEIR BUSINESS PARTNERS FOR A MAJOR CINEMA, LEISURE & HOTEL DEVELOPMENT ON NORTH STREET CAR PARK, ADJACENT TO THE CASINO ITSELF.

The following is an extract from the Scarborough Evening News on 4 September:

DEVELOPERS behind plans to build a hotel and multi-screen cinema in Scarborough town centre say they are "disappointed" not to have been given an exclusivity deal which would have allowed them to press ahead with their plans.

Last year, the North Street Development company, which includes Nik and Becky Shaw, owners of the Opera House Casino, revealed plans for a £70 million scheme to redevelop North Street car park in a project which could have created up to 300 jobs and seen a multi-screen cinema and 80-bedroom boutique hotel built.

However, director Ken Ferrie says he remains “very optimistic” about the scheme and the firm will continue to work positively and closely with Scarborough Council in the months ahead.

He said: “Unfortunately, due to legal constraints controlling the council, we have been unable to secure an exclusivity agreement which would allow us to purchase the land without having to go through a bidding process.

“However, the cinema and hotel operators we have secured as anchor tenants are prepared to wait until June next year to move forward with us.”

An earlier application by the firm to get an exclusivity deal with the council had already been rejected, but having spent around £200,000 developing their plans, the Shaws and Mr Ferrie had hoped to win the council over.

David Archer, the council’s strategic director, who has overall responsibility for overseeing development in the town centre, said: “A report will be presented to the council’s executive later this month.

“It will recommend that specialist consultants are appointed to advise the council on the suitability of entering a property partnership model with a private contractor to develop town centre sites.”

That means all sites identified by the council as suitable for development could be sold to a single developer once a tendering process had been completed.

Mr Archer said: “We anticipate it will take approximately three months for the consultants to reach their conclusions. We will then draw up a further report which will include detailed proposals on a way forward for development of the town centre and the North Street car park site will form part of those conclusions.”

Mr Ferrie said: “North Street Development shareholders had a meeting with senior council officers, including chief executive Jim Dillon and the head of regeneration and planning, Pauline Elliot, last month.

“We were told by the council that they were looking at selling several sites around the town centre for development. They say they want a joined up co-ordinated approach to develop the town centre as a whole rather than individual random sites.

“We understand the consultants will recommend whether the North Street car park is sold as part of a property package or as an individual site. We were assured by Mr Dillon that the council was impressed by our plans. We are now totally in the hands of the council and are ready to commence work immediately if we are successful in securing the land.”

The scheme is supported by train operators First Trans-Pennine Express, Scarborough Council, Chamber of Trade, the Scarborough Hospitality Associ-ation – which includes hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation, as well as the town's Urban Renaissance Group, the Forum for Tourism, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, and the Scarborough Evening News.It was initiated by the South Bay Traders' Association.

Organisers hope businesses across Scarborough take part. They can also broaden their support by including veterans and the families of personnel who have been deployed on military operations.

To benefit, servicemen need to show their official identity card. Veterans can show a regimental association or British Legion membership card while service families should also display identification.

John Senior, chairman of the South Bay Traders' Association and co-ordinator of the scheme, said: "The national press has recently been dominated by stories regarding the treatment of our servicemen, some positive and some negative. The introduction of an Armed Forces Day provides an excellent opportunity for Scarborough to show its support in a direct and positive fashion."

OHC RAISES ITS HAT TO CHARITY - Monday, April 21, 2008

Fundraising millinery and fashion show, A Night 'Hat' The Opera, was a resounding success. Get-A-Head-Hats, of Snainton, and Cosmetiqe, of Scarborough joined forces with St Catherine's Hospice for the sell-out event, which was held in Opera House Casino's Upper Circle Restaurant.

One hundred tickets were sold for the event, which included a champagne reception and a milliary show of 80 hats. All the models, who included Miss Scarborough Jade Saunders, gave their time free of charge and the event raised just over £1000 for St Catherine's Hospice.

A NIGHT "HAT" THE OPERA

Spring is in the air and that family wedding or day at the races is the ideal opportunity for a new outift, topped off with the perfect hat!

And Opera House Casino is proud to be hosting the perfect evening for you to take a look at some stunning chapeaux for this season whilst raising funds for the wonderful work of St Catherine's Hospice.

Guests will be welcomed with a glass of champagne and canapes, then treated to a beautiful fashion show presented by Get-A-Head-Hats.

After the fashion show there will be opportunity for guests to try on the hats and place orders, or make appointments to visit Get-A-Head-Hats showroom in Snainton, North Yorkshire.

OPERA HOUSE CASINO WINS BUILDING ACCOLADE - Friday, March 07, 2008

Opera House Casino has been named as the winner of the Best Non-Residential New Building Award in Scarborough Borough Council's building design awards competition.

More than 40 entries were submitted for the competition's four categories, which were best refurbisment/restoration scheme, best residential new building, best non residental new build and best shop front.

The competition, which started 10 years ago, is held every two years, and initially was confined to the town of Scarborough. But the interest in the competition meant it was extended to cover the whole of the borough outside the national park.

Scarborough Mayor Cllr Janet Jefferson, one of the judges, said: "It was a privilege to be part of the design award initiative. It was difficult to judge an outright winner and all the entries were commendable in their own right."

Nikolas Shaw, owner of the casino with his wife Becky, said: "We're delighted to have had this award bestowed upon us for the design of the casino and we would like to say a huge thank you to Ken Ferrie, managing director of KFB (Scarborough) Ltd and to the architects Frame International. We hope this will be the solid foundation with which to move forward into phase two of the development of North Street car park."

Please note that from January 2008, the Upper Circle Restaurant, located on the first floor of Opera House Casino, will be closed on Sunday's and Mondays. The Grill Menu (please see our Restaurant and Bars section for details) will be available from 5.00pm on these days.

The restaurant will be open from 7.00pm - 11.00pm Tuesday to Saturday.

International Gaming Awards 2008 - Wednesday, January 02, 2008

Opera House Casino is proud to have received three nominations in next year's International Gaming Awards.

The awards ceremony is to be held at the British Museum, London, on 21 January 2008, and Opera House Casino has been nominated in the Socially Responsible Casino Operator of the Year, Best Poker Roomand Casino Interior Design categories.

This is the first year that the awards have been held, and they have the potential and backing in the industry to become the "Oscars" of the gaming world.

Each year the awards ceremony will be held in a different part of the world, with national charities benefiting fromthe proceeds of ticket sales, etc. This year's charities are Care International and Macmillan Cancer Support. 2008's inaugural ceremony will be hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr.

2nd Year Anniversary Night - Thursday, October 25, 2007

ON 24th OCTOBER WE MARKED THE 2ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF OPERA HOUSE CASINO AND HUNDREDS TURNED OUT TO JOIN THE CELEBRATIONS!

The Upper Circle Restaurant was full to capacity with diners who'd booked in to enjoy a fabulous evening of entertainment from Elvis impersonator Kennie J and a sumptuous meal prepared by Head Chef, Peter Day. And they certainly weren't disappointed!

Kennie, from Hull, performed three 3 fantastic sets taking our guests on a journey through the career of the King of Rock 'n' Roll. All the hits were there, from Heartbreak Hotel right up to A Little Less Conversation.

Two stunning showgirls, Lauren & Kayleigh, brought some extra glamour to the evening, courtesy of the Dance Warehouse. Our members and guests certainly seemed very pleased to have them around!

Prize draws were held at midnight and 2am, each draw giving the lucky winner £500 in shopping vouchers. Scarborough's favourite comedian, Tony Peers, broke off from his new more serious duties as Chairman of the Town Team, to host the first draw, which was won by Mr Lynch.

On 28th February 2007, we held a massive giveaway draw night give away a whopping 3 pairs of tickets to Las Vegas! We held draws at 11pm, 12 midnight and 1am. The lucky winners were Mr & Mrs Fletcher, Mr & Mrs Wong and Mr Paul Dixon & Guest. They all were flown over to the fabulous Las Vegas where they stayed in a 5* hotel for 7 nights!

Loved up couples dined in our Upper Circle Restaurant on Valentines Day while being entertained by our in house vocalist, Rachel. The menu was only £19.95 for 4 courses including a free box of chocolates for the ladies!

On 27th September 2006 we held another successful free prize draw. Once again all our members collected the tickets on every visit and put half in the drum on the evening hoping to win. Mini Free Prize Draw - Thursday, February 02, 2006

On 2nd February 2006, we held a free prize draw and our members collected tickets every time they visited. All the tickets were put in the drum and at midnight one was drawn. Mr Yan Sang Cheung was the lucky winner who drove away the brand new Silver Mini One.

Preview Night - Tuesday, October 25, 2005

Tonight the casino opened its doors for the first time to the public. Training tables were put on every table for customers to practice their skills without betting with money and a fabulous free seafood buffet was available. Tony Peers was the speaker of the evening following by entertainment from Neil Hurst and Linda Newport. Dancing girls paraded the floor offering champagne and photographers and camera crews filmed as the evening went on.

Out With The Old & In With The New! - Saturday, October 01, 2005

When the owners of Opera House Casino originally bought the site it was nothing more than derelict shell. In the years previous to the purchase it has suffered two fires and an underground spring had been left unpumped. This caused flooding to the area under stage and into the main stalls area - a rowing boat had to be used to get to the stage!

A specialist company was brought in to assess the safety of the structure but, sadly, their professional opinion was that the old building was unsafe and would have to be demolished. Being a listed building special permission had to be acquired. Once this was achieved, the long journey to redeveloping the site began.

After many months, the stunning new Opera House Casino finally opened its doors to the public on 25 October 2005.
